On March 2, some car owners disclosed on the Internet that the model 3 they purchased used hw2.5 chips instead of hw3.0 chips marked on the environmental protection list. As soon as the news came out, it triggered a public opinion boom. In response, Tesla issued an official statement today, explaining that "Tesla Shanghai Super factory resumed production on February 10, during which, based on the supply chain situation, part of the hardware installed in the upgraded model 3 of the standard endurance is hw2.5." At the same time, the statement pointed out that with the recovery of production capacity and supply chain, Tesla will continue to provide free replacement of hw3.0 for the owners of the upgraded model 3 with hw2.5 controller hardware as planned. As one of Tesla's core selling points, the automatic driving aid function has always been favored by consumers, and the chip is the core configuration to support this product strength. Hw3.0 chip was released at the end of April 2019, which is the key for Tesla to realize fully automatic driving. Tesla officials pointed out that at this stage, if there is no FSD function, there is basically no difference in driving experience and safety between model 3 using hw2.5 and model 3 using hw3.0. All FSD customers have installed hw3.0 hardware. What are the differences between hw2.5 and hw3.0? Relevant data show that hw3.0 chip has the image processing capacity of 2300 frames per second, 21 times of hw2.5, and the computing power is improved by about 7 times. Meanwhile, the energy consumption of hw3.0 is only 1.25 times that of hw2.5 (the peak power of h2.5 is 57W, the peak power of 3.0 is 72W, and the difference is about 15W). In addition, hw3.0's hardware cost is also reduced by about 20% compared with hw2.5. From this point of view, Tesla's "simple matching" should be affected by the short-term supply chain as the official said. However, in the case of no cost control or castration function, such a large negative public opinion has been aroused, mainly because Tesla operates without prior notice, which pricks consumers' sensitive nerves to the simple matching of automobile enterprises. For consumers, the uncontrollable factors can be understood, but the premise is respect and transparency.
