(photo source: velodyne lidar) according to foreign media reports, Hyundai Mobis, a Korean auto parts company, will invest 50 million US dollars (about 350 million yuan) in velodyne lidar, a US lidar company. So, who is velodyne lidar? Why does modern Mobis invest? What kind of "chemical reaction" will they have? Velodyne lidar, as a well-known enterprise in the field of lidar, has officially started commercial production since 2007. According to incomplete statistics, velodyne lidar has released seven new lidar products in the past ten years. These products are continuously optimized by measuring distance and accuracy to better meet the high safety standards required for mass production, and are gradually being considered as "standard" for L3+ automatic driving vehicles. Because velodyne's lidar products are the core components of most autopilot projects, they are favored by many companies. It is understood that as early as 2016, velodyne obtained 150 million US dollars (about 1.062 billion yuan) from Ford Motor Company and Baidu company in China to develop and mass produce low-cost lidar for automatic driving and advanced vehicle safety system; in 2018, Nikon also invested 25 million US dollars (about 177 million yuan) in velodyne to cooperate in R & D and production of more Reliable solid-state lidar for autonomous vehicles and advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS). It is understood that after the completion of this investment, modern Mobis will cooperate with velodyne and will first target the Asian market. The two companies will integrate velodyne's latest lidar sensors into modern Mobis' cognitive software to create a new lidar system. At present, velodyne has the largest market share in the global lidar market, and its lidar technology has exceeded the latest requirements of global automobile manufacturers. The newly developed lidar system will adopt velodyne's high specification lidar and integrate the cognitive software independently developed by morbis. The cognitive software will process the external environment data collected by lidar sensors, so it can identify and analyze moving or static objects, traffic sign information and other road systems. The two companies will take the lead in supplying the system to Asian markets, then gradually expand to car manufacturers in North America and Europe. It is understood that in recent years, modern Mobis has made great efforts in intelligent aspect. At CES 2019, Mobis also launched innovative ICT (information and communication technology) for Chinese consumers, including 17 exhibits in the fields of automatic driving and vehicle networking, such as the first published face recognition authentication system, vehicle fingerprint authentication system, high-performance front radar, automatic parking system, etc. Next year, the company will acquire deep learning based cameras and high-performance radar technology.
